What a wonderful sharing of what Jesus did over 2000 years ago. We gathered at Mt Vernon GMC where Pastor Jason, Irion , Chloe and Emma hosted a meal for us. Poppy Seed Chicken, green beans, red potatoes, rolls and 2 types of cobbler: peach and apple. We were all stuffed. And the Fellowship hall was alive with chatter among friends. Jason reminded us that when Jesus gathered with his disciples for the Passover meal, they did the traditional things but then there most likely was chatter among friends.

When we finished eating, we moved to the Sanctuary. Jordan shared his gifts and talents by singing several songs, including the moving song “Where you there when they crucified My Lord”. After singing, Jason then shared why this Thursday is called Maundy Thursday. Maundy means Covenant or Commandment. And Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment: to love one another as Jesus loved them. And that is our commandment. It is a different commandment from Jesus telling us to love one another as we love ourselves. Some people don’t love themselves and that could be a problem for loving others. But if we love others as Jesus loves us, then love is genuine.

After hearing the scripture from John 13, we were invited to a time of foot washing, reminding us that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and friends. In Jewish homes, foot washing was done by the lowest Gentile slaves. Jesus, Lord of Lords, took on that lowly servant role to demonstrate to his disciples that we are all to serve each other.

Following foot washing, we then had a time of communion, reminding us of his body and blood shed for us.
A somber evening but yet one so necessary to remember that Jesus loves us so much, he gave himself for us. As Easter Sunday approaches, we can truly celebrate the resurrection.
